Although the existence of video games dates back to the creation of Bertie the Brain in 1950, there wasn't any gameplay unique to the medium until the release of Spacewar! over a decade later. Spacewar! is a competitive shoot 'em up for two players, each one controlling a spaceship with a limited amount of fuel and ammo. Movement is physics-based and affected by the gravity of the star in the middle of the playfield. Hyperspace travel can be activated to warp to a random location, but in some versions there's a chance of self-destruction that increases with each use. Spacewar! was rather complex for its time and would turn out to be quite influential. However, I have no interest in playing it due to it being a multiplayer-only title.
